I heard about this this morning and was appalled.
But then what finally brought down Trudeau's predecessor was brought
down was that sad Syrian boy who drowned off the coast of Greece (was
his name Curdi?) and whose aunt - who lives in Canada - blaming the
Canadian government for his death. It got a lot of publicity during
the 2015 campaign though the truth was that the boy's father had
picked up a form to apply to come to Canada BUT HAD NOT ACTUALLY
FILLED IT OUT TO APPLY. Nevertheless Justin gained a lot of votes by
claiming that the boy had died because the Harper government didn't
care - though it is difficult to imagine what response a government
owed to a refugee applicant who had NOT applied to come to Canada.
Not even Trump would make that claim - but Justin certainly did and
that won him the 2015 election as much as any other factor (but mostly
because Canadian prime ministers win 3 elections but not 4 - and
Justin himself has now won 3)
It's now late July so it is unlikely Justin will take "a walk in the
snow" like his father did. (That's a Canadian reference since when
Pierre Trudeau announced he would not be running again he made his
decision when outside walking in the snow - which obviously isn't
happening in late July or early August - even in Ottawa!)
